Department of Zoology was initiated in the year 1974 at the undergraduate level. In spite of being an undergraduate department, it had contributed along run of academic service with major zoology and ancillary botany under the umbrella of Biology department. In the year 2018, the department was upgraded to a postgraduate level and started offering M.Sc Zoology with emphasis on Environmental Microbiology. It has a precept of inculcating biological ideas, concepts and techniques for rural students.
The department functions with competent and experienced faculty. The staff members vigorously engage in teaching, research and co-curricular activities to boost and build careers of the students. The students are trained in the new horizons in instrumental techniques, communication skills and personality development. Interest is being focused on outreach programmes like, entrepreneurship training, internship programme in Zoology Domain. Every year industrial and environmental field visit is being organized to equip their practical knowledge.
Laurels of University rank holders are being produced as a credible achievement of our department. The alumni of this department attain a pivotal position in reputed Institutions and in various fields. The Department is currently maintaining 1 functional MoU with reputed Institution for mutual coordination and co operation in academic and practical knowledge.
The curriculum is revamped once in 3 years to meet the requirements of higher studies and job opportunities. The B.Sc. programme of the Department provides a strong foundation in the fundamental concepts of various branches of Zoology like Invertebrata, Chordata, Cell biology; Biochemistry, Genetics, Biostatistics, Physiology, Development Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Evolution and Bioinformatics. Skill based courses like Economic Zoology, Vermiculture, Sericulture and Ornamental fish culture are offered and trained for self employment and women empowerment.
The M.Sc. programme provides in-depth study in Cell and Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Animal Biotechnology, Techniques in Biology, Environmental Biology, Entomology and Aquaculture. The curriculum also includes a dissertation for the post graduate students and guided in research field to submit their thesis at the end of the course.
